British art: 'Bed and Breakfast' at the Savoy at Red Rag Gallery

The gallery is offering two new paintings from British artist Janet Ledger.

Born in 1934, Janet Ledger studied painting at the Northampton School of Art. Her paintings have great appeal and can be found in many public and private collections including the Tate Gallery. Janet has tremendous ability to capture the atmosphere and colour of a scene. This is very evident in the paintings currently available.

The new paintings are good examples of Janet's art work featuring day to day British scenes of people going about their lives. The scenes are at opposite ends of the British social and geographic spectrum. A woman in Newcastle upon Tyne is featured in the street in Woman Eating Chips whilst in London Ledger has observed and captured a scene outside one of the UK's most exclusive hotels in Bed and Breakfast . Both paintings are painted in oils and are available to purchase.

Subjects are sometimes dislocated from their surroundings or hover lending an air of mystery. There is a three-dimensional dream-like quality to his contemporary art.

Joe Hargan was born in Glasgow and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. He has exhibited paintings since the early 1970's at: the Royal Glasgow Institute of Art; Royal Society of Watercolors; Royal Scottish Academy of Art; The Paisley Art Institute; Royal Academy, London; Dick Institute, Kilmarnock; British Watercolour Society & National Portrait Gallery. He creates images which are visually compelling and which form a bond with the viewer.

Limited Edition Print 'Morris and Kitty' by Paul Robinsion

This week we have been featuring British artists who have their art work published as Limited Edition Prints . The process of producing Limited Edition Prints from the art works of British artists is well established. The original artwork is first photographed using a high resolution, large format digital camera together with specialised lighting. The resulting digital image is transferred to a computer where the image goes through a series of colour correction procedures until the artist is happy that the colours are a true representation of the original artwork.

The production and sales of Limited Edition Prints have increased significantly in recent years. A key reason for this growth of limited edition prints has been the development of Giclee technology. This involves spraying ink from very, large highly specialised format inkjet printers which are used to create art prints and limited edition prints. Most limited edition prints promoted by Red Rag are giclee art prints.

Today’s featured British Limited Edition Print artist is Paul Robinson . Paul Robinson paints in a distinctive naive style. Inspiration for his limited edition prints comes from the East Anglian landscape with great expanse of sea and sky and the people who are found in the area. There are ten titles in Robinson’s limited edition print series including: French Lieutenant’s Aunty; Narcissus; Lady With Dog and Newspaper; Weekenders; Arthur always liked to share his Baguette; Rainy Day in Jetty Street and Ethel and Archie

Paul Robinson limited edition prints can be purchased from Red Rag Bath Art Gallery. For further details email the gallery or

Scottish Art: Georgie Young paintings from Red Rag

The featured artist on the Red Rag Blog today is Scottish Artist Georgie Young.

Georgie Young is a graduate of the Glasgow School of Art. Her work is inspired by the Scottish landscape. Georgie aims to evoke a feeling and capture a sense of place in her paintings. She seeks to create atmosphere or an unexpected detail rather than reproduce a direct likeness.

Georgie Young contemporary paintings are a product of observation, interpretation and improvisation. The original observation is processed, re-examined and the essence abstracted. Young's paintings attempt to reveal the unexpected beauty of un-remarked places, the interplay of light, time, weather and season on everyday landscapes, and the presence and influence of the human on the physical environment.

Georgie Young paints primarily in acrylic using a bold palette and rich textures. Red Rag Gallery has been showing Georgie’s paintings since 2004. She has an enthusiastic following of art collectors. For more details contact the gallery.

Ann Shrager painting at Red Rag Bath Art Gallery

Today’s Red Rag post features the art work of talented British Artist - Ann Shrager.

Ann Shrager was born in London in 1948 and studied art at the Byam Shaw School of Painting. She then attended the Royal Academy Schools in London.

There is a quietness about Ann Shrager’s art work. Although colour plays a key part in her paintings there is a subdued softness to her modern art. This coupled with simplicity and space are recurring themes in Ann Shrager paintings, making them enduring modern art pieces.

Along with fellow artists David Cobley, Charles Hardaker, Ken Howard, Karolina Larusdottir, Andrew Macara and William Selby - Ann Sharger is a member of the New English Art. Ann’s art work is regularly exhibited at NEAC art shows.

Much of Ann Sharger’s art work is inspired by observation from her regular travels. Today’s post was inspired by a visit to India. The painting is titled ‘The Bridegroom’ and is a little gem of a painting. She has successfully captured the moment.

Paintings by Ann Shrager are available from the Red Rag Bath Art Gallery.
