British art: 'Bed and Breakfast' at the Savoy at Red Rag Gallery

The gallery is offering two new paintings from British artist Janet Ledger.

Born in 1934, Janet Ledger studied painting at the Northampton School of Art. Her paintings have great appeal and can be found in many public and private collections including the Tate Gallery. Janet has tremendous ability to capture the atmosphere and colour of a scene. This is very evident in the paintings currently available.

The new paintings are good examples of Janet's art work featuring day to day British scenes of people going about their lives. The scenes are at opposite ends of the British social and geographic spectrum. A woman in Newcastle upon Tyne is featured in the street in Woman Eating Chips whilst in London Ledger has observed and captured a scene outside one of the UK's most exclusive hotels in Bed and Breakfast . Both paintings are painted in oils and are available to purchase.

Red Rag Art Exhibition

The current show at Red Rag Gallery in Stow on the Wold features new paintings from three British artists with a reputation for creating compelling paintings of quirky figures. The artists appearing in the show titled ‘Characters’ are: David Eustace and Scottish artists - Joe Hargan and Joe Hargan.

David Eustace was born in 1950. He completed a degree course in Fine Art at Exeter College of Art. David Eustace observes the everyday world around him but presents it with an individual style and viewpoint. Subjects are sometimes dislocated from their surroundings or hover lending an air of mystery. There is a three-dimensional dream-like quality to his contemporary art.

Joe Hargan was born in Glasgow and studied at the Glasgow School of Art. He has exhibited paintings since the early 1970's at: the Royal Glasgow Institute of Art; Royal Society of Watercolors; Royal Scottish Academy of Art; The Paisley Art Institute; Royal Academy, London; Dick Institute, Kilmarnock; British Watercolour Society & National Portrait Gallery. In 1996 for the quality of his paintings and his service to Scottish art Joe Hargan was awarded the Paisley Art Institute diploma.

Alan King was born in Scotland in 1946. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art. Alan King is best known for his paintings which feature the Red Hat and this continues to be a major theme to his contemporary paintings. King’s skill in storytelling and a love of early Italian Art are the roots of the development of his fine paintings. He creates images which are visually compelling and which form a bond with the viewer.

The ‘Charatcters’ art show continues until 12 June. The gallery is open every day from 10:00

Painting by Karolina Larusdottir from Red Rag Gallery

A Happy New Year from all at Red Rag Gallery

For our first post of the new year we feature the art work of Karolina Larusdottir . Karolina was born in Reykjavik, Iceland in 1944. However she has lived and worked in the British Isles since the 1960’s and today is very a much a British Artist in terms of style and approach.

Karolina Larudottir studied contemporary art at the Ruskin School of Art in Oxford. She is an elected member of: the Royal Society of Painter–Printmakers; the Royal Watercolour Society and is also an elected member of The New English Art Club which includes other Red Rag artist members David Cobley, Charles Hardaker, Ken Howard, Peter Kelly , Andrew Macara and William Selby.

Karolina Larusdottir's unique vision of both her homeland and England has won her a deservedly high reputation in the fields of contemporary painting. Many Larusdottir contemporary paintings are rooted in her upbringing in Iceland. Her Grandfather was the owner of the first grand hotel in Reykjavik. Glimpses of this busy environment, scenes of chambermaids, chefs and waitresses in the kitchen are engagingly evident.

In some paintings Karolina Larusdottir creates a world of her own, with imaginary people in strange situations, often floating, carrying rainbows or being visited by angels. Often Karolina’s contemporary paintings contain a wry humour that enhances the surreal and timeless qualities she creates when dealing with her favourite subject - people.

Karolina Larusdotir successes include many solo and mixed art shows in the most prestigious exhibitions of modern art in Britain, Europe, Africa and USA. In 1993 and again in 1997 the Royal Academy used her paintings to advertise the Summer exhibition.

British art: artist Andrew Macara at Red Rag Gallery

Andrew Macara is today’s featured British Artist at the Red Rag Gallery.

Andrew Macara was born in Derbyshire in 1944. He is a member of the New English Art Club along with fellow members David Cobley, Charles Hardaker, Ken Howard, Karolina Larusdottir and William Selby. His paintings also regularly feature at the Royal British Artists (RBA) London art exhibitions. Other Red Rag members of the RBA include: Stephen Brown and Steven Outram. Macara contemporary paintings are also regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy of Art in their Summer Exhibitions.

Andrew Macara travels extensively gathering images for paintings from around the world. But his native Derbyshire continues to feature in many paintings. Elvaston Castle in the Derbyshire Peak District is the setting for today’s featured art work. This is a charming snow scene with children throwing snowballs at one another in front of a stand of trees lit by low winter sunlight. Another character perhaps the artist himself is seen in shadow in the foreground.

Andrew Macara’s subjects vary but his painting of snow scenes is distinctive because of his treatment of light and shade. Long blue-grey shadows capture a snow scene perfectly. He looks for colour and movement and manages to convey a sense of life in his paintings. ‘I believe in becoming involved and participating in the hustle and bustle of life. It is painting this visual experience that interests me’.

Paintings by Andrew Macara are available from Red Rag British Art Gallery together with Andrew Macara Limited Edition Prints .

British art: artist Tina Morgan

Today’s featured British Artist is from the West Country. Tina Morgan was born in the British seaside village of Lynton in 1952. After studying art and design in Cornwall Tina went to work as an Art Director. During this time she won many awards including two at the Cannes Film Festival.

In 1985 Tina Morgan decided to change career direction and began painting as a full time professional artist. Since then Tina has exhibited her art work widely and today she has established herself as an artist with a reputation for capturing the light and the lazy day holiday buzz of people relaxing on the south Devon beaches. Her softness of palette and great skill in observing and depicting people creates art work with a timeless quality.

Tina Morgan art works are primarily oil on canvas. Talking about her paintings Tina says: ‘ I use oil paint because the colour and textures are so rich. I develop the background and paint onto that with a knife for texture. Long springy brushes are used for the detail. The memory of a scene has always been far more interesting than the impression viewed on the day. So I capture the moment with a pastel or pencil sketch and photographs, then spend a long time just observing the view

Cornish artist: Jo March

Today we feature the art work of British artist Jo March

Jo March was born in 1962 and brought up on a family farm in the small Cornish moorland village of Darite in south east Cornwall.

Jo March’s upbringing, living in the Cornish landscape and the people that she met, is a strong influence on her choice of subject and how she depicts the landscape in her paintings. Inspiration for Jo’s paintings and limited edition prints is often drawn from the environment and the people of her childhood. She has abiding fascination with the eccentricities which exist just below the surface of rural life and in particular the characters that she observed in Cornwall whilst growing up.

Jo March’s paintings and limited edition prints are remarkably individual in outlook and style, drawing inspiration from the stunning Cornish countryside.

Today’s art is a Limited Edition Print from Jo titled ’Hendra’. Hendra is nestled at the head of the idyllic Polperro Valley and has the attributes so loved by locals and visitors in Cornwall. This Jo March Limited Edition Print captures the beaches and Cornish landscape in a quirky fun loving format. A house stands proud over looking the fields of grazing sheep. All is well with the world and although there are no people in the print there is a feeling that they are not far away.

British art: artist Sylvia Antonsen

Today's post features artist Sylvia Antonsen and her painting 'Trevose Head'

Antonsen is fascinated by the British coastline and its maritime buildings. Sylvia's travels and observations have taken her to many UK counties including the county of Cornwall. Trevose Head Lighthouse is British built on the north west extremity of Trevose Head on the north Cornish coast. Its white tower rises above the dramatic sheer grey granite cliffs that are more than 45m above the level of the sea. The light in use today is one of a pair originally constructed here — a higher light and a lower. Pairs of fixed lights helped ships get their positions more accurately. It is the 27m tall higher light that remains in use — a white-painted cylindrical stone tower with gallery.

Sylvia Antonsen has captured the lighthouse on a bright uplifting day. The building stands majestically against a brilliant blue sea and sky. And, the safety and security associated with lighthouses is reinforced by the calm and confident scene. As in all of Sylvia Antonsen’s work it is this linear quality that accentuates a sense of order.
